This is great news for fans of Gigondas wines, one of the most famous appellations in the Rhône Valley. The appellation is now available in white! This is excellent news for this great appellation, which until now has been dominated by red wines.
And at Domaine de Cabasse, we’re particularly proud to be part of this historic turning point. Starting with the 2025 vintage, our vineyard will welcome new white grape varieties, and we’ve already started preparing the soil for this great adventure.
You can see it in the photos: our winemaker and pianist Corentin is in the field, preparing our benches at an altitude of 440 metres, overlooking the valley to the west. It’s here, on these magnificent plots, that we plant Clairette, a white grape variety perfectly suited to our terroir. We’re convinced that this variety will be able to express all the minerality and delicacy we’re looking for in our wines.
It has to be said that the Gigondas terroirs have real potential for white wines. Here, the wines are straight and chiselled, like the imposing cliffs that rise from the Dentelles de Montmirail, the forest massif that surrounds the village. The limestone, which unites a mosaic of complex and varied soils, brings incomparable minerality and freshness, a precious asset in the face of the challenges of global warming. On the palate, we find delicate aromas of lime blossom and acacia, supported by a long, elegant acid structure.
We won’t be able to taste our first white wine until 2028, the time it will take for the young vines to settle in and reach their full potential. As always in viticulture, we know that ‘time is of the essence’. What requires years of patience for the winemaker is also a challenge for the wine itself, which must take the time to develop, discover and transform. But we are confident in our work, and we know that it will be rewarded with a white wine of great purity and minerality.
So, starting with the 2025 vintage, with the planting of Clairettes on Gigondas, we’re writing a new chapter in our history. We hope this new cuvée will win you over with its freshness and elegance.
